Very few books are out there, there were very few to bigin with. In the last few year I have only heard about two, one is on line in San Francisco for $200.00. Don't know the whole story but I believe the publishers/creators of the book spent so much money creating it that they folded. Condition is unread but there is minor "shelf" wear, it has been packed with other books for over 15 years. It would fall under the Western category. It is fiction but the illustrations are of the Old West & the story takes us there -The Old West. The writer is Tom E. Knowlton, the illustrator Neil Boyle. 25 tipped in plates, full color on two sided blank cream paper.
Neil Boyle originally from Fort Maclen in Alberta, Canada, grew up in Indian country. His father, an honorary chief of the Blood and Peigan tribes of Canada's Blackfoot Confederacy, handed down a knowledge of Indian life and history which colors Boyle's portraits of the early west with unusual authenticity. The diary: May 1888 Today is my eleventh birthday, Grandma gave me this diary. She said being eleven is a lucky time to start a diary because the diary will become my friend. I am going to be a cowboy. I told Daddy last night when he tucked me in bed. ...the reason I din't write nothing for two days is because grandma never will get to see her Broadway theater. Doctor Ashley came back in the morning and I had to go back up to my room. It was a long time. Then Daddy came up and said Grandma wanted to see me. She was lying on her bed beneath her big comforter she made last fall. Her face was white and her hand was shaky whe she reached over and took my hand, but she smiled when I said, "How are you grandma?" Her hand squeezed mine a little when she said my name soft, then her hand slid back on the comforter and she went to sleep gentle and Mama started crying awful. Uncle George put his arm around my shoulder and we started back up to my room and when we went out the door Doctor Ashley reached down and patted me on the head. ...It is awful with grandma gone. I don't feel like writing on my diary everyday now. Grandma said the diary will be a record om my life.4th of July 1888 This morning we all got up early and dressed up to go into Tarrytown to celebrate Independence Day. Daddy put on his best suit and Mama wore her new dress and bonnet she sewed last week. I had to polish my shoes twice and wear my white shirt and blue suspenders and red bowtie and my new straw hat. Uncle George wore his old Navy uniform and strapped his Navy pistol on his side. Daddy and uncle George had curried the horses till their coats shined and people looked at us and waved whe we came into Tarrytown. There was a big parade with a band and steam engines blowing their whistles and Uncle George marched at the front with the other old (Civil War) veterans and carried the flag.5 July 1888 First Try (second picture) Then I aimed at the bottle, but I think it was because I closed my eyes just before I squeezed the trigger because I heard the shot when my ears started ringing and my arms flew up and I fell back against Uncle George, and when I opened my eyes I heard the shot echoing down the valley and a crow cawed loud as he started winging up.June 1895 On The Money -I took it easy on him for a ways, then I stopped and gaged out a rough quarter of a mile. His muscles tensed when he sensed what I had in mind and when I gave him a little nudge with my heels he took off like the wind and ran that quarter mile so fast it almost took my breath away. He didn't seem to tire a bit, probably because he is young and strong and has such good spirit. He has a lot of pride, so I have named him... Fantastic
