The East Pennsylvania Railroad was incorporated on May 26, 1856 as the Reading and Lehigh Railroad Company by a special Act of the Pennsylvania Legislature. The name was changed to the East Pennsylvania Railroad Company on April 21, 1857. The company operated a double-track line extending from Allentown to Reading, a distance of 35.8 miles.
