This token was carried by a crew member or passenger of the USS Joseph T. Dickman World War II Attack Troopship during most of its campaigns, most famously during the D-Day Invasion of Normandy at Utah Beach on June 6th, 1944! The ship was also used in the following campaigns: Algeria-Morocco from November 8th to November 17th in 1942; Gela, Sicily from July 10th to July 12th in 1943; Salerno, Italy on September 9th, 1943; Southern France from August 14th to August 16th in 1944; and Okinawa Shima from April 1st to April 9th in 1945. Having originally been built as a Passenger/Cargo Liner for the Emergency Fleet Corporation in 1920 under the name SS Peninsula State, the ship was transferred to the US Shipping Board in 1922, and then again to the United States Line (changing names to the SS President Pierce and then again to the SS President Roosevelt), before being taken over by the War Department in 1940. There it was dubbed the USS Joseph T. Dickman in honor of the Commanding General of the Third Army during World War I. After its campaigns, the ship was decommissioned in 1946, earning 6 battle stars for its service: the Combat Action Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. As a warship, the USS Joseph T. Dickman measured just over 535 feet long, had 170,000 cu. ft in cargo capacity, could move at a speed of 17 knots, was armed with 24 to 26 different AA gun mounts, operated with a crew of nearly 700, and could accommodate transport for over 2,000 soldiers. For more information on the ship, check out the link below! In regards to the token, the obverse side offers an incredible depiction of the ship with the Europe and Asiatic Pacific campaigns that the token’s owner participated in listed below. The token itself was previously a Morgan Dollar, as evident from the reverse, which shows warped detail and damage from the detail being punched into the obverse. It comes in a plastic flip. A great gift for any WWII fanatic!
