About the ZEKUU Series:
"ZEKUU" is derived from the Buddhist phrase shikisoku zekuu (form is emptiness), expressing the idea that all things exist through interconnection and impermanence. When you open the elegantly simple wooden shrine, a small golden figure gently watches over you—always close, always serene.
Commemorative Edition – Shingon Triad:
This statue is part of a special release celebrating the 1250th anniversary (2023) of the birth of Kōbō Daishi. The series features individually or collectively the key figures of Shingon Buddhism:
Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana) – the cosmic Buddha
Fudō Myōō (Acala) – wrathful protector, an incarnation of Dainichi
Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) – founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan
Each statue is individually blessed at Kongō Sanmai-in and serves as both a spiritual protector and a meaningful keepsake.
About Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai):
Born Saeki no Mao in 774 in present-day Kagawa Prefecture, Kūkai was a scholar, monk, and calligrapher. After studying esoteric Buddhism in Tang China, he returned to Japan and established the Shingon sect. He is also known for founding the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage and receiving the posthumous title “Kōbō Daishi.”
To this day, daily offerings are made to him at Okunoin Temple on Mount Kōya, where he is believed to rest in eternal meditation.
About Kongō Sanmai-in Temple:
Founded in 1219 by request of Hōjō Masako to pray for the soul of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the temple is renowned for its ancient structures, including the National Treasure Tahōtō Pagoda. It remains one of the key spiritual sites on Mount Kōya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
