Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” was released on October 29, 2009, and is compatible with early “fat” PlayStation 3 consoles via Sony’s discontinued OtherOS feature (firmware 3.15 or lower only). This Alternative Edition uses a text-based installer, making it ideal for the PS3’s limited RAM and lack of GPU acceleration. The full GNOME desktop is installed unless manually deselected during setup.

⚠️ This version only works on firmware 3.15 or earlier and is not compatible with Slim or Super Slim models. Installing requires repartitioning the hard drive, which erases all PS3 data.

Installation Instructions:

  • Copy otheros.bld to /PS3/otheros/ on a FAT32 USB

  • Install OtherOS via PS3 XMB: Settings > System Settings > Install Other OS

  • Set Other OS as default boot

  • Boot into Petitboot or Kboot

  • Insert CD and begin the text-based installer

  • Repartition HDD and install full desktop

Important Disclaimers:
