The BRU-57/A Smart Rack, developed by EDO Corporation (now part of Harris Corporation, acquired in 2016) under a U.S. Air Force contract, is a state-of-the-art multiple ejector rack designed to dramatically enhance the firepower of modern fighter aircraft like the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle, and F-35 Lightning II. Introduced in the early 2000s as part of the USAF's precision-guided munitions (PGM) proliferation efforts, the BRU-54 (its predecessor) and subsequent BRU-57 variants allow a single pylon station to carry up to four Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs, such as the GBU-39/B) or similar 250-lb class weapons, effectively quadrupling payload capacity without sacrificing aerodynamics or range—earning it the moniker "The Force Multiplier" for enabling one sortie to deliver the ordnance of four traditional missions. Fielded extensively since 2005 on USAF, ANG, and allied platforms (e.g., 510th FS Buzzards at Aviano, 113th FS Hoosiers during their F-16 era, and 366th FW Gunfighters), it integrates with MIL-STD-1760 interfaces for smart bomb release sequencing, reducing collateral damage via GPS/INS guidance. The rack's lightweight titanium/aluminum construction (under 100 lbs empty) and compatibility with carriage envelopes on legacy fighters have made it a cornerstone of expeditionary airpower, with over 2,000 units produced and ongoing upgrades for hypersonic and networked munitions.
