The History of
... Panerai.... is the most famous Italian watch
company. But keep in mind, Panerai is now produced in
Switzerland, not Italy. Originally founded in Florence in the
1860’s, this “watch workshop” was commissioned by the
Italian Navy to produce a watch that could be easily
read underwater. The early prototype was actually fitted
with Rolex parts.Giovanni Panerai and his family had no
idea, back in 1860, just how significant the Panerai
watch company would become a century and a half later. Panerai
started his business by producing measurement and
precision systems for the Italian Navy, which
gradually lead to an affinity for watchmaking and
other precision instruments. The company continued to develop
in parallel with the Italian Navy, and the commandos were
equipped with wristwatches produced by Panerai. In
1930, Panerai watches were well known in the Italian
military and the company had an exclusive contract
with the Navy to produce their watches and aiming sites for
various types of weaponry. The ruggedness and durability of
the Panerai watches is still symbolic today, and the
company only started producing wristwatches for the
general public in 1993....
The featured
watch is a Swiss made Panerai Radiomir 8 Days “Otto Giorni" PAM00992,
AISI 316L stainless steel square cushion-shaped solid two-body case
measuring 45mm diameter. Fixed stepped bezel, wire 1930's era lugs.
Manual winding movement, power reserve up to ± 192(8Days)hours.
Displays a matte Black sandwich dial with beige vintage tone
luminous Arabic numeral hour markers, 6 and 12 and stick baton hour
indices, blued steel hands with luminous inserts. Small constant
running seconds subsidiary dial, luminous lozenge, stick markers,
luminous "propeller" shaped indicator hand at 9 o'clock. White circle
at the 3 o'clock position has "8 Giorni Brevatto". Onion-shaped pull
out signed winding crown. Plexiglas crystal, sapphire display
caseback engraved with "OFFICINE PANERAI – 100M – STAINLESS STEEL,"
and hallmarks. Brown Calfskin faux vintage leather strap with a
stainless steel Tang buckle. Water resistant to 100m/330ft… Display
signed " Panerai ", Caseback inscribed & numbered, Movement signed…

Radiomir 8 Days “Otto Giorni" PAM00992, AISI 316L stainless steel
square cushion-shaped solid two-body case… “It's inspired by one of
the original Radiomir models of 1936. The Panerai Radiomir “Otto
Giorni” (that's "eight days" in Italian) PAM00992 is about what you'd
expect from a modern Panerai Radiomir, with a few aesthetic flourishes.
The 45mm case is made of AISI 316L stainless steel. The case is treated
to give it a vintage feel. The dial feature is a matte Black
sandwich dial with beige vintage tone luminous Arabic numeral hour
markers, The rest of the dial is familiar: small seconds at 9 o'clock,
with the text "8 Giorni Brevettato" ("8 days patented") counter
balancing that subdial at 3 o'clock. The sandwich dial uses
Super-Luminova, with large Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock. The
Panerai caliber P.5000, features a robust, hand-wound, eight-day power
reserve, is visible through a sapphire caseback. The PAM00992 is a
worthy tributes to the nearly 90-year legacy of the Radiomir. The
sandwich effect look is well executed with the Black dial, in
particular, seems to fit with Panerai's retro motif. Paired with the
matching calf-skin strap and contrasting stitching, and large Panerai
tang buckle. There's a reason the Italian Navy ordered the first
Radiomir prototype in 1935 and enthusiasts everywhere continue to wear
