The outer frame (also wood) measures about 28” x 32”

Shimizu is generally acknowledged as a leading Japanese landscape artist.

He was born in 1905 in Aomori prefecture in the northernmost part of the main island of Honshu.

In his youth, he studied under the internationally-known Gakuryo Nakamura, and he and Mr. Nakamura remained close friends until the latter's death in 1969.

While still in his twenties, Mr. Shimizu was accepted into membership in the Jigenkai Kaiyu Art Association.

Shimizu lived in California for the last 50 years of his life – arriving in San Francisco the early 1930s, passing in Los Angeles in 1986.
