An exceptional and grand antique figural inkstand.
It is crafted in heavy gilt metal and is based on a design by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, a famous British Sculptor known for his large scale sculptures of dinosaurs and reptiles.
The original inkwell design featured a similar cobra holding a crystal ball also with a compass all in solid bronze, published in 1850.
This is a later modified version of the original with the same snake design but with the addition of a Putto and colourful paste cabochons.
A very heavy and well made piece, early 20th century c1920s
Condition: Good used condition overall, some light surface wear commensurate with age and use, light surface scratches
