Cuneiform script is one of the oldest known writing systems in the world, dating back to around 3400 BCE. Developed by the Sumerians in ancient Mesopotamia, cuneiform was initially created for recording economic transactions. The name "cuneiform" comes from the Latin word "cuneus," meaning "wedge," due to the wedge-shaped marks made by pressing a reed stylus into clay tablets.
