In the year 1946, the Soviet space program is undergoing turmoil: Professor Sedych is planning to lead the first crewed expedition to the Moon. He is denounced, however, by his rival, Professor Karin, as being too old and too mentally unstable for the mission. Aided by his assistant Marina and a boy named Andriusha, Professor Sedych ignores Professor Karin's authority and takes off for the Moon.
Shot as a silent film, Cosmic Voyage had but a brief appearance in early 1936, before quickly being quashed by Soviet censors (apparently, they felt that the stop-motion animated sequences of cosmonauts hopping across the Moon were antithetical to the spirit of Socialist Realism. The censors should really have chilled a little: after all, this was obviously science fiction. Had this been a real event, Professor Sedych would have been arrested, interrogated by the NKVD, and send to an eastern penal camp for disobeying the orders of his superiors!Has Russian intertitles with switchable English subtitles.
