A hand coloured antique mezzotint engraving by Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) after a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds P.R.A. (1723-1792).
Titled 'Guardian Angels' it is a charming portrait of a small child held in the embrace of two young angels.
Published March 30th 1786 by John Rapheal Smith of 83 Oxford Street, London. (This printed in faint lettering along the bottom of the sheet but is hidden by the mount).
Printed on thick laid paper and in very good original condition, the only point to note a tiny tear in the top right margin just below the mount (not in the image) - see fifth photo above. Lightly toned in the margins, conducive with age.
A rare and desirable engraving, see uncoloured impressions in the collection of the British Museum, Yale and National Trust.
Well presented with a dark grey card mount within a antiqued gilt wood frame. Both mount and frame are in excellent condition.
Glazed and ready to hang. Please excuse reflection/flash in some of the photographs.
Measures 50 x 50cm including the frame, the image only is 34 x 34cm (inc title area).
Postage £8 in the UK, £26 to mainland Europe and £50 to the USA.
