THE BERESFORD MOTOR WASH BASIN.

BERESFORD'S PATENT APP FOR REG No.742631.

JAMES BERESFORD & SON LTD.ENGINEERS, MACHINISTS AND BRASS FOUNDRY.

CATIO STREET, BIRMINGHAM.

EARLY 1920s.

This very rare item, now probably around 100 years old, was made in Birmingham, UK, for installing onto the running boards of very early up-market vintage/veteran motor cars. This was designed for chauffeurs or for travelling mechanics, as a means of washing their hands after dealing with the motor car on the road, e.g., changing a tyre, etc. The interior (which is almost certainly nickel – plated) is in perfect condition, and features a small metal plug on a fine chain. The water for the sink was stored in the space underneath, and was pumped into the basin by depressing the shaft on the left-hand side, with also featured a nozzle to direct the flow. Also featured is a receptacle for a bar of soap, and behind that, a storage area for a hand towel. After the completion of the ablutions, the plug was withdrawn and the waste water then poured out through the drain pipe onto the grass or road below.

PRE-LOVED USED CONDITION, THE OUTSIDE HAS BEEN WELL HANDLED, WEATHERED AND IS SHOWING SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR.

THE ORIGINAL FASTENING WORKS AND HOLDS THE BOX CLOSED (although from some of the dents in the lid a little stiff).

THERE IS A BAR OF 'MOTORISTS HAND SOAP' SET IN THE SOAP HOLDER.
