Title / Subject: 'America sive India Nova. ad magnae Gerardi Mercatoris aui Universalis imitationem in compendium redacta. Per Michaelem Mercatorem Duysburgensem.'

Date: c.1595 or slightly later (signature letter M verso suggesting 1616 or 1619 edition).

Size: the printed area measures approximately 370mm x 460mm, with good sized margins beyond. Latin text verso.

Description: An original, antique, copper-plate engraved map of North and South America which also shows a large southern continent, several islands around the North Pole, and New Guniea at the left edge of the map. Four inset roundels show the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, and the title of the map identifying Michael Mercator (Gerard's Grandson) as the engraver. Based on Rumold Mercator's world map of 1587, this is the only map that Michael Mercator engraved. 

Some interesting details include a large inland lake in Canada, a northern sea-passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a phantom treasure island off the west coast of South America, and reference to the giants of Patagonia in the southern part of the south american continent.

Condition: Good conditon. Very appealing hand colouring. Good sized margins. Some bumps and nicks to the edges of the sheet, not affecting the printed area. Centrefold as published with some creasing parallel to the centrefold. Minor repair at the base of the centrefold and the very bottom of the printed area at the centrefold. Light age toning. Age spot visible at the left side of the southern landmass. Some small remants of tape at the edges of the sheet on the reverse side where the map has previously been mounted for framing and display.
