by Hubert Selby
First edition, first printing in dust jacket
New York: Grove Press, 1964. First edition. 304 pp. Publisher's black cloth and red paper-covered boards, spine lettered in red. Very Good+ with a few small stains to textblock edges, in a Very Good jacket with a small closed tear to the front panel, tape reinforcements to the verso.
Selby's dark masterpiece, which was the basis of the 1989 Uli Edel film starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. Street gangs, severe loneliness, and sheer human cruelty are the scourges of the Brooklyn of this novel, not celeriac-based entrees or text neck.
