SEDNA (read below)

(looking like a mermaid)

INUIT CARVING - SOAP STONE

WALRUS WITH THE FACE AND BREASTS OF A WOMAN

Her face is looking straight up, not forward

7 1/2" Tall x 7" Long x 2 1/2" Wide

weighs 5.1 pounds

THIS IS A SINGLE STONE

think of the skill it takes to carve and polish an artistic opening in the stone

The signature is very difficult for me to discern.

Symbols?

Perhaps "LETO"

or, is that two Ts in the middle "?TTO"

If so, maybe OTTO I from the Gjoa Haven community?

There are a few Inuit artists with the name Otto, but I have not been able to see their signature for comparison.

THE DARK BAND AROUND HER TAIL is NOT a crevice or crack - it is simply a striation of color - just solid stone. There is a vein of black up around her neck and a little lower on the tail

Do see my pictures.

FROM THE INTERNET:

Sedna is a figure from Inuit mythology, usually depicted as a vengeful goddess, mother of the sea, and important figure to be placated to provide the bounty of the sea. In many versions of the story, she loses her fingers, which become sea mammals. Unable to comb her hair, it becomes matted and tangled, and shaman must placate her temper and the harm it causes hunting by combing her hair.
