POSITION: Outdoors. In a sheltered position, both from strong winds (which will scorch the leaves), and burning sun. Partial shade is ideal.  If a hard Winter threatens, then wrap some fleece around the pot to protect the roots, this is a fully hardy outdoor bonsai tree.

WATERING: Maples must be kept moist - do not let the soil dry out.

SOIL: Prefer acidic - a mixture of 80% peat, and 20% bark is recommended.

BONSAI STYLES: suitable for all styles except literati.

PRUNING: Twin new growth to one or two pairs of leaves in Spring. Remove large leaves throughout the growing season. Wire immediately after leaf cutting. Total defoliation in midsummer will reward you with smaller leaves and a better autumn colour.
