The phrase "Join or Die" is historically significant and associated with a famous political cartoon.  The cartoon was first published in Benjamin Franklin's newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette, on May 9, 1754.  The cartoon depicts a snake cut into eight segments.  Each segment was a representation of the American colonies (or regions) at the time.  The message was loud and clear! The colonies must join together against common threats and enemies and become one whole entity.
