On the obverse the statue of Jacob Van Artevelde, slightly turned to the left with ALL AROUND AT THE TOP, JAKOB VAN ARTEVELDE. ; at the bottom along the edge, LEMAIRE, GHENT. and recessed at the bottom of the pedestal, P. DE VIGNE. INV. ; all around a raised collar. On the reverse in the center the crowned Ghent coat of arms surrounded by a pearl circle with outside it all around at the top, IN MEMORY OF THE FESTIVITIES OF 13-18 SEPT. 1863. ; at the bottom, flower GENT flower ; all around a raised collar. The artist, Victor Lemaire, had hoped that his first prestige creation for this medal would be issued by the City of Ghent, but this did not happen. He self-published them, but was so disappointed by this that it was not until 1879 that he became seriously involved in medallion work again. 1 5/8 inches in diameter. Hard to find!
