Scarce wooden box, produced around 1869. Shows the American clipper ship Sea Witch, designed by John W. Griffiths for Howland & Aspinwall and launched in Manhattan on December 8, 1846.
Under Captain Robert Waterman, she set a record in 1847 by sailing from Hong Kong to New York in 77 days, and then broke her own record in 1849 with a 74-day run.
This record was held until May 2003 when the trimaran Great American II accomplished the trip in 72 days.
By the 1850s, Sea Witch had deteriorated and was repurposed to carry immigrants.
In 1856, she ran aground near Havana with 500 Chinese immigrants aboard.
Several ships were later named in her honor.
