MANS CLASS WINNER.-

The R.1 Jowett Jupiter, competition

version of the production Jupiter sports

two-seater, in 1951 form. The dif-

ference in headlamp position and details

of front cowling between this and the

1952 R.1 can be seen by comparing

this picture with that on page 119.

Interesting technical features are the

protruding valve cover, thus ensuring

that it is in the air-stream, and the

exhaust pipe running round the front

of the car. Jowett's technicians claim

that straight-through exhaust pipes

merely result in a loss of power.

ANOTHER UNCONFIRMED RECORD?-According to Douglas

F. Long of Mather & Crowther, Ltd., film actress Jill Melford claims

to have been the first person in Britain to fill up with branded petrol

in the "Second Branded Petrol Era." If, as stated, Miss Melford really

drove in this car clad as the handout picture shows her, and waited an

hour for the pump (conveniently caught by the cameraman-what was

he waiting for?) to be unlocked at midnight, she is now probably down

with pneumonia. What interests us is that the car is an Alldays out-

side a certain Weybridge garage. We note, too, that it is described as

1903, bears a 1904 V.C.C. plaque, is said to be Miss Melford's own, and

to be

one of the oldest cars in Britain." [Curtains-ED.]

Top, left: CHILTERNS TRIAL.-Winner of the Special Club Award in the M.G. C.C. Chilterns Trial was C. O. Gregory. He drives determinedly

with screen flat.

Top, right: FOILED.-K. Joslin's M.G. slews round on the snow and mud and foils his efforts up Whiteleaf. His passenger has great faith in the

strength of the windscreen. Let us hope the front number plate was cleaned before the journey home.

RARE PICTURE of the early steam

car owned by Ivan Carr's father and

referred to in his "Cars I Have Owned"

article last December-see accompany-

ing letter from Mr. John C. Barlow.

We are told that it was raining and

cold when this picture was taken and,

knowing how difficult it is to get ladies

into open cars in such conditions, we

look and marvel!
