Magnificent 1885 decorated Ernest Chaplet 8" pitcher for Haviland Cie. No chips or cracks. Chaplet was one of the most important figures in the French art pottery movement at the turn of the century. He established a workshop with Dammouse in 1882 and he became head of the studio for American-owned Haviland company which made and exported Limoges porcelain to the United States. Chaplet worked in ceramics with Paul Gauguin after 1886. He brought Chinese and Japanese themes to his works and after 1887 took up residence in Choisy le Roi, often collaborating with the factory of Alexandre Bigot. Ernest Chaplet won acclaim at the 1900 Paris Exposition and his works are in the Musee D'Orsay. Chaplet lost his sight in 1904, and his son-in-law Emile Lenoble took over the studio. Rarely available works by Chaplet are a presence in any collection. Signed with his customary rosary.
