The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the world's largest coral reef system, made up of over 2,900 reefs and 900 islands, and covering 344,400 square kilometers. 

It's located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, and is visible from space. The GBR is home to 400 types of coral, 1,500 fish species, 4,000 types of mollusk, and endangered species like the dugong and green turtle. 

It was named a World Heritage site in 1981.
