Nikko Company (ニッコー株式会社, Nikkō Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese manufacturer of fine ceramics, known for its tableware products. Nikko was founded in 1908 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa by Lord Maeda and local nobles. The Maeda lords especially fostered arts and crafts, and wanted to make Kanazawa a cultural centre like Tokyo and Kyoto. With state policies encouraging new industries and acquisition of foreign currency, Nikko began exporting to China, India, Australia, Central and South Americas, and Europe. Under post WWII government ordinances, the former company was liquidated and Nikko Ceramics Co Ltd was newly founded in Kanazawa City. The company spreads the use of western plateware to the homes of Japan during this period of rapid economic growth. In the 1960s, based on the corporate mission to "make living more comfortable", production of a full line of fine ironstone tableware was established. In contrast to the cool white of ordinary porcelain, the colour of fine ironstone is warm milky white. Ironstone is more heat-insulating and more resistant to physical shock than conventional porcelain. The underglaze decorations look perpetually fresh and don’t fade or wear off with use. In 1978, as demand for luxury items increased, Nikko Fine Bone China was born. To meet diversifying needs and to differentiate their products from others, Nikko develops bone china made with over 50% bone ash. With its pure white colour and superb translucency, it is said to be the whitest in the worldwide market and has a reputation for durability and chip-resistance. Nikko has rightfully gained an international reputation for quality and innovative designs which are representative of Japan, the country of ceramics. In 2008, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary and created a new logo for the company. Continuing to meet the demands of the current market, in 2022 they began manufacturing Bonearth - the world's first ever fertiliser made from recycled plateware that otherwise would have been thrown away.
