Utagawa Hiroshige was one of the most famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist.
Meisho Edo hyakkei (One hundred Famous Views of Edo) is Hiroshige's largest set of famous landmarks. The work began in 1856, the last year of Hiroshige's life, and was completed as a set of 119 pictures, including works by Hiroshige II, who added to the set after his death. The Echigoya in the painting is the present-day Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi (Tokyo) and the Mitsui Main Building, where the Mitsui Memorial Museum of Art is located.
