About this stamp issue:
Date of issue: 6
September 2023
This stamp depict the German battleship "Tirpitz" in Arctic waters.
The Allied had a small garrison
in Barentsburg (Svalbard) with men from Norway, Canada and Great Britain. The
garrison was established with aim to build a weather station. Both the Allies
and the Germans needed weather forecasts for the Arctic Ocean. This became particularly important after the US and
Great Britain began sending weapons and materiel with the Arctic shipping
convoys in August 1942.
To
avoid the Allied to build up weather forcast capasities on Svalbard the Germans
carried out the attack on Svalbard with the battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst
in September 1943. Barentsburg,
Longyearbyen and Grumantbyen were almost completely destroyed.
