About the Team:
Atlanta's 1939 lineup was anchored by outfielder Johnny Rucker, who hit .346 for the Crackers. The Crackers won the Southern Association title that year thanks to Rucker and his teammates. This was the Golden Age of minor league baseball in Atlanta, and the ’56 Crackers won the pennant, then topped the Memphis Chicks in the post-season playoffs. Clyde King managed Atlanta to a 89-65 record and the Crackers led the league in attendance, drawing 265,578 fans. Atlanta would repeat their pennant and playoff triumphs in 1958 and be promoted to the AAA International League in 1962. Home games were played at fan-friendly Ponce de Leon Park.
