Die mittlerweile zum Duo geschrumpfte, bayerische Synthpop-Institution !distain meldet sich 2018 mit ihrem neuen Album "Farewell To The Past" zurück. Es ist mittlerweile das achte der Bandgeschichte und wartet mit elf Tracks auf, von denen die Vorab-Singles "SynthPopBoy" sowie "Maid Of Freedom" bereits erfolgreich den Weg geebnet haben.

Mit dem Albumtitel geben Alexander Braun und Manfred Thomaser ohne Umschweife einen Rahmen vor, in den man die präsentierten Lieder einbetten und sie dort zusätzlich mit den eigenen, individuellen Erfahrungen ergänzen kann. Neben den offensichtlichen Bezügen zur Vergangenheit gilt es dabei, auch die kleinen, versteckten bzw. nicht ganz so offensichtlichen Hinweise zu entdecken.

Augenfällig sind natürlich die Trennungen von ehemaligen Bandmitgliedern, die es zu verschmerzen galt. Sie führten !distain immer wieder auf neue Wege, zu neuen Herausforderungen und Höhepunkten. Über die Jahre hat sich dadurch das unabdingbare Bestreben manifestiert, stilistisch nicht auf der Stelle zu treten. Außerdem ist es dieses Mal ganz offensichtlich, dass die beiden Protagonisten noch mehr zu einer Einheit verschmolzen sind, und am Ende wurde sogar die erste Produktion in Eigenregie bewerkstelligt. Die abwechslungsreichen Kompositionen sowie der ausgewogene Klang legen ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis davon ab.

Trotz der noch größeren Bandbreite hat man natürlich nicht mit den bewährten Tugenden gebrochen. Man findet somit erneut eingängige Single-Kandidaten mit hohem Suchtpotential, die jedoch mal wieder mit Texten aufwarten, die oft mehr Tiefgang zu bieten haben, als es die Ohrwurmmelodien auf den ersten Blick vermuten lassen. In diesem Sinne schmeicheln sich Lieder wie "SynthPopBoy", "Maid Of Freedom", "Wake Me Up" oder auch das fetzige "Wer im Kreise geht" ein, ohne dabei ins stumpfsinnige Radio-Pop-Format abzudriften. Auf der anderen Seite höre man nur die spaßig anmutende, aber doch ernst gemeinte Mär vom "Hirtenmann" oder auch die makabre, echte Begebenheit in "The Guest House". Das ist alles andere als massenkompatible Ware von der Stange. Berührende Geschichten wie "Waiting For A Song" oder "Letter To Myself", halten das Werk am Ende zusammen und verleihen ihm zusätzliche Tiefenschärfe. "Farewell To The Past" bietet somit einen schillernden Raum für eine Rückschau bzw. ein Innehalten, lebt aber gleichzeitig auch vom Bestreben, zu neuen Ufern zu gelangen. (Torsten Pape)

In 2018, the Bavarian synthpop institution !distain – meanwhile reduced to a duo – are back with their new album “Farewell To The Past”. It is their 8th album in their band history featuring 11 tracks of which the pre-released singles “SynthPopBoy” and “Maid Of Freedom” have successfully paved the way.

With the album title, Alexander Braun and Manfred Thomaser set a framework to embed the presented songs and complement them with individual experiences. In addition to the apparent references to the past, it is worth to discover the small, hidden or not so obvious hints as well.

It is evident that the parting of former band members had to be accepted leading !distain to new paths, new challenges and highlights. Over the years, the band has become determined in their ambition to keep moving. This time, it is also quite obvious that both protagonists have fused even more into a unit resulting in their first production off their own bat. The varied compositions and the well-balanced sound bear an impressive witness thereof.

The wider range notwithstanding, they have not broken with proven qualities. Again, you will find catchy single aspirants with a highly addictive nature, but also presenting lyrics with more thoughtfulness than the catchy melodies let you expect. Along these lines, songs like “SynthPopBoy”, “Maid Of Freedom”, “Wake Me Up” and the groovy “Wer im Kreise geht” cosy up to the listener without drifting off into trivial radio pop formats. On the other hand, just listen to the merry, but sincere fable of the “Hirtenmann” or the morbid and real incident at “The Guest House”. This is far more than some mainstream merchandise off the rack. In the end, touching stories like “Waiting For A Song” or “Letter To Myself” keep the oeuvre together and give it an additional focus. “Farewell To The Past” provides a colourful space to pause for a moment and look back, but at the same time lives from the eagerness to reach new shores.

The album will be pre-released as a special double package edition through POPONAUT together with the Axel Braun EP "Eiskalt" on October 19th and officially available as single CD and download starting from November 2nd.
