Title: Driving and Cycling Road Map of the Bermuda Islands. Specially compiled for the Rexall Store, Hamilton, Bermuda.

Description: Hamilton, Bermuda: The Rexall Store, [ca. 1900]. Color map, 9.5" x 25", folding into 18mo brown cloth covers, with pictorial color paper affixed on upper cover. CONDITION: Good, .5 cm x 3 cm loss on upper cover image, 2" closed tear center left edge map, 1" separation on top left fold of map, 6" separation at bottom left fold of map, two small chips on border of map.

This charming map, with its appealing front-cover illustration depicting cyclists on a road, shows all of Bermuda from Somerset Island to St. George's Island, and also includes an inset street map of Hamilton. A printed note in the lower left-corner provides information on the condition and nature of the roads (including a designation for poor roads with a very steep grade considered "dangerous for wheeling"). Another note below the title indicates that the map was "specially compiled for the Rexall Store, Hamilton, Bermuda." The drugstore must have enjoyed a large tourist clientele and presumably had a ready market for such a map, which was published during the cycling craze that began in the 1890s.
