THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC (1918-1933), NAMED FOR THE TOWN WHERE THE CONSTITUTIONAL ASSEMBLY TOOK PLACE, FILLED THE POWER VACUUM AFTER THE COLLAPSE OF IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT AFTER WWI.

IT SOUGHT TO ESTABLISH A PARLIAMENTARY GOVERNMENT, BUT WAS HAMPERED BY SEVERE PENALTIES INFLICTED BY THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES AND ENFORCED BY THE ALLIES, AS WELL AS ECONOMIC WOES BROUGHT ON BY THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND OVERWHELMING HYPERINFLATION OF CURRENCY.

POLITICAL UNREST BETWEEN COMMUNIST AND NATIONAL SOCIALIST MOVEMENTS ADDED TO AND FUELED SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC  STRIFE. THE RISE TO POWER OF ADOLF HITLER IN 1933 BROUGHT ABOUT THE END OF THE REPUBLIC.

AFTER WWI, THE FORMER GRAND DUCHY OF SAXONY BECAME THE FREE STATE OF SAXE-WEIMAR-EISENACH, WHICH MERGED IN 1920 INTO THE NEW FREE STATE OF THURINGIA, WITH WEIMAR AS ITS CAPITAL. WEIMAR WAS ALSO THE CAPITAL OF THE GERMAN REICH OR GERMAN REPUBLIC WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED BY CONSTITUTION IN 1918. THE TERM WEIMAR REPUBLIC WAS FIRST COINED BY ADOLF HITLER IN A SPEECH MADE IN 1929.
