Alta Studios original glass plate negative - pre 1920.  Prints were made from the original camera negative to control contrast and these prints could also be retouched as necessary.  The print would then be photographed to obtain a large master negative to be used to make multiple prints for sale.  This is a very detailed negative - better than the scans can show here. Some retouching of the print can be seen.  The method is very like that used in the '50s by Irving Klaw - 5x4 "inter negatives" were made from original 2.25 size camera negatives from which many prints could be made.

Alexander J. "Zan" Stark (1889-1967) was a Michigan-born photographer who moved to San Francisco, California around 1914, where he established a photography and lantern slide business under the name Xan Stark, Alta Studios. In the early 1920s Stark produced at least three volumes of photographs of female nudes in an "Alta Art Studies" series. Most of the girls in the photographs were either silent screen actresses or wanna-be actresses.
