Stained. I made the mistake of washing it and some of the fabric ripped. It has a solid under fabric. You can leave as is or continue the crazy patch look and add new fabric. I had to remove many rusted pins and needles. It is clean (still stained) and ready for new pins or as shelf decor for your beloved sewing/craft room!
