FEATURED: A stunning example of what happens when Mother Nature and a imaginative, wonderful artist collaborate, this striking MAPLE BURLWOOD & GRAPHITE WALL SCULPTURE is a piece that caught our eyes from across a big room- done simply by turning a section of Burlwood in concentric circles, then enhancing those circles and the natural occlusions & channels found in Burlwood with a graphite coloring, a soft shimmery black that plays beautifully against the incredible grains & patterns in this prized and rare form of Maple. There is a whole lot going on in this 6- inch sculpture, but it all works so handsomely together- the artist SCHULTZ, whoever he/she was/is, really loved his woods and knew just when to stop turning circles and leave the rest of the design to Mother Nature here.... We enjoyed it as much on a flat surface as hung on a wall, and the artist obviously did too, as he put hangers in three spots on the back so that no matter how it's hung, it is one spectacular King of the wall, even with its small size! We wish we knew who the artist was/is, but the first name is illegible to us, so we don't know where this was made, where the wood's from, or anything about the artist- we really wish we did, as we'd certainly love to have more of works like this, you betcha! Burlwood is a highly prized variant of different woods, caused by stress to the tree, such as from weather, insects, injury, etc, causing the tree/its branches to form small knots or irregular grain patterns from dormant buds. Most burls form underground but are also seen in those huge knots on the sides of trees as well. Burlwood has been revered in Asia for centuries, and Burlwood can be found all over the world. Schultz really knew what he was doing when he picked out this section and went to work- it's a gem of a piece and a great 'big little' sculpture that would be a prize in any wood/sculpture/art collection.
MEASURES: 6.25 inches across, 2 inches tall; made of Maple Burlwood enhanced with graphite coloring . Not sealed or stained, this is natural maple at its best. Signed on the bottom, with an illegible first name and SCHULTZ, not dated. In amazing condition, ready to hang on a wall or sit serenely on any surface. We purchased this at an estate sale of a wood sculpture collector who traveled extensively to add to his collection. A perfect addition to any sculpture or wood art collection, or for someone who loves the Natural World and its wonderful trees as much as the artist obviously did.
