The XR4400 utilizes IRC (Interactive Radio Control) Expander/Gate circuitry for virtually inaudible noise suppression, and features an extremely short attack time (<10 μsec) to capture ultra-high speed signals, such as drums and other percussive sounds. Adding to this, the XR4400 offers a parametric Side Chain filter (with monitor function) and separate, independent Hold and Release controls for the utmost in envelope-shaping flexibility. And we included our FlexLink system for awesome flexibility when used in master/slave configurations.
The innovative FlexLink function implemented in the XR4400 allows for a variety of couple options. For example, when you press the Couple switch of channel 3, this channel is automatically configured as a “slave” channel, while the neighboring channel 2 becomes the “master” – now controlling all parameters for both channels. To control channels 2 and 3 from channel 1, simply press the Couple switches of channel 2 and 3.
One of the XR4400’s most outstanding features is the program-dependent control of attack times. The IAC circuit (Interactive Attack Control) analyzes the program material to calculate the attack time by way of interaction, so the hold/release process is triggered automatically depending on the program material – which is why the XR4400 does not need a dedicated attack control!
With the Mode switch in the “Off ” position (up), the XR4400 works in Gate mode, and applies an extremely-fast attack time to gate all kinds of drum and synthesizer sounds – without cutting off their percussive edge. In Expander mode (down), the XR4400 analyzes the shape and dynamic content of the input signal to calculate the control time parameters – thus working as an interactive Expander that adapts automatically to the program signal. The result: guitar sounds, vocals and complex mix signals can be “cleaned” without audible clicks, breathing or other unwanted sounds. Additionally, you can use this function to freely expand any type of program material’s dynamic range.
When several microphones are used in close proximity, such as with a drum set, crosstalk between mics can lead to false triggering of the Gate circuit. The built-in parametric Side Chain filter allows you to accurately select the exact frequencies causing any false triggering and apply it, so the Gate only reacts to those specific frequencies. You can use XR4400’s Monitor function to pre-monitor the filter, which makes it easier to adapt to the acoustic properties of the signal.
Thanks to its intuitive control panel, even inexperienced users will find the XR4400 easy to operate, and its professional features will give you total control over your sonic environment.
