I designed and made this sun tracking controller as a lesson from my solar panel DIY project. I have been using a dual axis controller that I bought online, two of them have stopped working after several months mainly due to overheating causing the lines to "melt". In my design I added a front and rear heatsink and designed thick traces for the power lines. I also selected an extended temperature comparator chip and covered the board with a white solder mask which should reduce the internal heat from direct sunlight a bit. I offer the controller with relative comfortable Price in favor of DIY hobbyists like me.
The design has two flavors, single axis or dual axis, ie a board with single sun tracking for East/West control or North/South and one with dual axis to control West/East and North/South.
The Sun Tracker Controller supports the most common application of 12VDC +/-20% from a battery or other power source.
The controller uses an H-bridge that drives the motor in either direction, ie clockwise/counterclockwise, left/right, or up/down depending on the position of the sun. The controller doesn't automatically re-dose at night in the morning, it uses the LEDs Field of view so that in the morning the east sensor drives the motor and shifts to the point of the morning sun as long as the sun is visible to the controller. The design can work with only one LED, I put two LEDs for each compass direction to be more flexible Field of view as these LEDs are narrow angle field of view. With the LEDs you can catch More Field of view, ie tilt the LEDs slightly so that each LED covers a larger angle, this will ensure smoother operation.
