Jules Georges Redon
(1869 - 1943)
was
a French figural artist
known for his humorous
and sometimes naughty
portrayal of children
and animals. He also
did a great deal of
Poster work, many of
which remain treasured
parts of French history.
He did much work for
the cabarets and
restaurants in his
Montmartre
neighborhood,
in humorous covers
for Restaurant Menus.
“The Duck After The Worms”
was originally for one of his
famed Montmartre Neighborhood
Restaurant menu Covers!
The Text at the lower margin
of this 1931 Lithograph reads:
“le canard mange les limaces”
The phrase translates to
“The Duck After The worms”.
another quite famous
Jules Georges Redon
Restaurant Cover reads:
“Ne buvez jamais d-eau.”
which translates to:
“Never Drink The Water”.
this Menu-Cover was desirable
for restaurant owners who
wanted to increase wine sales!
A third Redon
Montmartre Restaurant
Menu-Cover featured a Hen
looking at the bare bottom
of a child at sleep with
the Phrase:
“La poule mange les escargots”
or, “The Hen Eats The Snails”
and the meaning of the
translation is quite evident!
