The British Empire was for centuries arguably the greatest trading network in the history of the world. Ships sailed to six of the seven continents bringing goods from one part of the globe to another. Coins were sometimes minted specifically for the global transactions that made this trade possible. One of the most famous such coins was the British Trade Dollar, to which this release of the East India Company pays tribute.
Obverse: The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem. The design was created by Jody Clark. Encircling the image is a rim frame that bears inscriptions of the monarch's name, "QUEEN ELIZABETH II," the name of the issuing territory, "ST. HELENA," the face value of the coin, "ONE POUND," and the date, "2022." Jody Clark formerly worked for the British Royal Mint and is a renowned international artist. His work includes designs not only for coins and medals but also for gifting, plaques, jewelry, album covers, and more.
Reverse: On the reverse, Britannia faces half left. She has long, flowing hair that is partially covered by a Corinthian helmet that bears the Union Jack, and she holds a trident, which represents the naval tradition of Britain. In the background is a globe with Great Britain highlighted. The words "TRADE DOLLAR" are inscribed in the upper left along the rim.
