The first 2 3/4" of this gouge is constructed from hardened steel
This appears to be an antique Douglas Manufacturing Company gouge. It is stamped "D.M. CO." The Douglas Manufacturing Company operated in Vermont from around 1856 until 1877. Brief research seems to indicate that the James Swan Co. bought the company out in 1877.
