White markings/blemishes in slate are common and are hundreds of millions of years old. They are not a defect, they are a natural characteristic of the stone normally only visible after the slate has been split.

The gold/silver crystals are pyrites, a type of metal inclusion that is present in all natural slates, but not always visible.

We recommend HAND WASHING in warm soapy water.
