The suicide of Archduke Rudolph at Mayerling in 1889 left open the succession to the crown of Austria-Hungary.  As a result, Franz Ferdinand became the next in line to rule the empire.  Unfortunately, his views on how to rule the empire are considered too liberal.  His generosity and openness prevent him from getting along with the monarchy.  Franz Ferdinand decides to marry Sophie Chotek, a Czech countess.  Franz Joseph forces him to declare the marriage morganatic, thus preventing any of Ferdiand's descendents from inheriting the throne.  Upcoming events, though, will make the point rather moot.
