Growing instructions

  1. Prepare a sterile growing environment by sterilising all containers, tools, and surfaces with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water).

  2. Obtain a suitable orchid seed sowing medium, such as a sterilised agar-based medium with nutrients, often used in flasking.

  3. Sterilise the monkey orchid seeds by soaking them in a 10% hydrogen peroxide solution for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Rinse the seeds thoroughly with sterile distilled water three times to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide.

  5. In a sterile environment, such as a laminar flow hood or still-air box, sprinkle the sterilised seeds evenly onto the surface of the agar medium in flasks or jars.

  6. Seal the flasks or containers immediately to prevent contamination.

  7. Place the sealed containers in a warm location with indirect light, maintaining a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F).

  8. Avoid direct sunlight, which can overheat and damage the developing seeds.

  9. Monitor for signs of germination, which may take several weeks to a few months, depending on conditions.

  10. Look for small green protocorms (early orchid structures) as the first sign of germination.

  11. Allow the protocorms to grow into small seedlings with leaves and roots while still in the sterile flask.

  12. Once seedlings are large enough to handle (several cm tall with visible roots), prepare for deflasking.

  13. Gently remove the seedlings from the flask and rinse off the growing medium using lukewarm sterile water.

  14. Plant the seedlings into a fine, well-draining orchid mix such as sphagnum moss or fine bark.

  15. Place the seedlings in a high-humidity environment, such as a covered tray or humidity dome.

  16. Keep the plants in indirect light and maintain a stable temperature of 18–24°C (64–75°F).

  17. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity but avoid waterlogging the medium.

  18. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to lower humidity over several weeks as they mature.

  19. Once established, transplant to standard orchid pots with a suitable epiphytic orchid mix.

  20. Continue care with bright, indirect light, regular misting, and feeding monthly with a diluted orchid fertiliser.
