Growing instructions

  1. Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining cactus or succulent compost mix.

  2. Sprinkle the seeds thinly on the surface of the compost without covering them, as they need light to germinate.

  3. Mist the surface gently to moisten the compost without waterlogging.

  4. Cover the trays or pots with clear plastic or place them inside a propagator to maintain humidity.

  5. Place in a warm location with temperatures around 21–29°C (70–85°F).

  6. Keep the compost consistently moist but not soggy during germination.

  7. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks.

  8. Once seedlings appear, remove the plastic cover to improve airflow and reduce fungal risk.

  9. Provide bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light, avoiding harsh direct sun on young seedlings.

  10. When seedlings develop 2 to 3 sets of true leaves, transplant them carefully into individual pots with well-draining soil.

  11. Use a sandy, loamy soil mix rich in organic matter for growing on.

  12. Place plants in a warm, sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  13. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

  14. Feed with a balanced fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.

  15. Provide support for climbing as dragon fruit is a climbing cactus.

  16. Protect plants from frost and temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

  17. Repot plants as needed to provide room for growth and fresh soil.

  18. Prune to control shape and encourage branching.

  19. Monitor for pests such as mealybugs and scale insects and treat if necessary.

  20. Encourage flowering by maintaining good light, warmth, and fertiliser regimes.

  21. Harvest fruit when it turns bright pink or red and is slightly soft to the touch.

  22. Enjoy fresh dragon fruit or use seeds to continue propagation.

  23. Maintain patience, as dragon fruit plants can take 1 to 2 years to flower and fruit.
