While preparing Cajon-Rail Passage to the Pacific, the author amassed a huge number of photos from his many railfan friends. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the photos on hand could be included in the book due to space limitations. The purpose of this volume is to share some of the photos that were not included in the earlier book as well as updating the material with all-new photography.
The publisher has suggested that a larger selection of color photos be included in this volume, and the author feels that everyone who sees this album will agree that it was a mighty fine suggestion. The photos included in both the color and in the black and white sections have been arranged in geographical order, starting at San Bernardino
and continuing up the grade to Summit, then downgrade to Victorville. Photos of the Southern Pacific line constructed in 1967 will be found in the appropriate locations adjacent to the Santa Fe line (over which Union Pacific and Amtrak operate via trackage rights).
It should be kept in mind that timetable directions on the SP are westward when headed toward San Francisco and eastward when headed away from there. So in the Cajon Pass area where SP and AT&SF lines more or less parallel each other between Dikel Devore and Hiland/ Summit, trains ascending the grade on the SP are westbound while those on the AT&SF arc eastbound, and vice versa.
