Our panels.
Our modular back-boarded panels come in an Edwardian design as shown in the pictures and are priced individually. You need multiple panels to cover a wall.
The panelling when fully fitted is 110cm tall, although we can make minor adjustments to this height if required.
The Edwardian design 'F' panels in this listing feature a run of 25cm x 25cm enclosed recessed squares along the top, with vertical rectangular sections that are 25cm wide.
Please see the diagrams in the listing which show how the panelling works.
All kits are supplied with vertical end strips to complete the last panel. If you need more than one vertical strip to complete multiple walls, we will send them with the kit. Vertical strips can be different widths. They come as standard as 7cm but we can make them any width (within reason), to get a perfect fit.
Each panel is 32cm wide and interlock together to cover the width of your wall/s. For example, 10 x panels and a 7 cm vertical strip would cover a wall of 327cm (3.27m).
Please see the diagrams in the pictures which show how the panels interlock and work. The vertical panels are 96cm tall and 32cm wide, they lock together to cover a wall. 14cm high horizontal footer sections are supplied which are up to 3 panels wide, the footer sections form the bottom border for the panelling. The footers are installed first and have a recessed groove in the back into which the vertical panels slot, the backboard joins are hidden. Horizontal footers minimise the joins along the bottom between panels. We can supply footer sections at different heights, depending on whether you are mounting panelling from the floor with skirting to the front, or the panelling above skirting.
The footer sections and vertical end strips are included free with the panelling kit we supply.

Panel material.
All our panelling is made out of high-quality specialist Medite branded premium moisture resistant MDF. This is an exceptionally smooth material that doesn’t swell if it gets wet. Ideal for sanding and painting it is much easier to sand perfectly smooth than normal MDF- including the edges. Medite costs 50-100% more than standard MDF and is the best material for MDF panelling- accept no cheaper alternative! If it is brown it is cheap MDF, Medite is green.
Our panel back boards are 6m thick and the front battens are 9mm thick, giving a total panel thickness of 15mm. The square and rectangular recesses are 9mm deep.
We also offer lower profile panels at 12mm thick with 6mm deep recesses. Check out our other listings for this.
Our back-boarded panels are supplied pre-made ready for fitting. All panels are supplied with imperfections filled and sanded.
About closed-back (back-boarded) panels.
This design of panelling is inspired by Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian period panelled rooms - but with a contemporary clean look. (Check out William Morris's Red House for inspiration.) This super value hand made wall panelling is supplied in water resistant MDF modular sections ready to fix straight to the wall. You can then paint to finish.
This panelling is 'closed backed' and is designed to be fixed to any wall using No More Nails, PVA or similar adhesive, you can also use nails, screws, battens and nails etc.
'Closed back' panels have additional back panels fitted so the original wall surface is not visible at all when the panelling is fitted. We can supply closed back kits so please contact us about this option.
Closed back panelling has several advantages over 'open backed' where panel strips are normally glued to smooth plastered walls:
- Can be fitted to unfinished walls with bare brick or blockwork
- Can fitted over woodchip wallpaper and similar 'unfashionable' textured surfaces, like artex
- Can be used to box in pipes when fitted with battens
- Unlike open-backed panelling the front sections of the panels are already pre-fitted professionally and square to the back panels, they are also filled and sanded for very easy and quick install
- These panels can be supplied pre-finished with white primer (select the primed option)
How our DIY panelling is installed, 10 easy steps to an amazing wall
- Check the unique drawing supplied with your panelling showing the final layout
- Fit horizontal footer sections first to each wall, supplied in numerical order as per your drawing
- Slot in the vertical panels, note any numbered panels and their location
- Allow for 0-2mm gap between back-panels, this is covered up by the next vertical panel
- You can use hidden nails or countersunk screws on the vertical overlapped part of each panel for fixing to walls
- Front panels should be flush- joints push closed
- Fit vertical end panel strip last, trim edge with electric sander progressively if required
- Fix skirting to front if required
- Fill and sand joints between footers and panels, this is kept to a minimum by the horizontal footer design
- Paint in your final colour- normally 2 coats of good quality matt emulsion is perfect.
Pre-priming service
We offer a pre-priming service for some of our panels. If this is available you can select this option from the listing when ordering. We undercoat the visible facings of each panel in white high-performance primer, this sands very smooth for final painting.
Important note on measuring your wall for kit sizing.
When measuring walls, measure at three points for width and your chosen height and allow a 2-5mm total margin for error gap for width and height. Walls, floors and ceilings are never exactly level and square. Any resulting gap is easily covered with decorator's caulk or filler prior to painting. We may ask you about this if you request a custom kit.
