This is the sandpaper that I use and recommend for sanding opal and ironstone. 

The WS Flex 16 sandpaper gives a beautiful, consistent finish on the surface 

and outlasts all the other sandpapers that I have tested.

The opal surface can be pre-formed using aggressive diamond tools, 

then use 180, 240 or 320 grit to do the medium sanding 

and the 400, 600 or 800 grit to do the fine sanding/pre-polish.
