If you do no other maintenance whatsoever on your engines, just replace the washers and oil the threads periodically...PLEASE. The components get stuck, especially in hard water areas, or where lead or aluminium washers have been put in place on the whistles of newer TE1a machines. Old washers can look fine, but become ineffective as they get hard and brittle.

Attempting to remove a jammed component by force WILL break the solder joint and necessitate a difficult and disfiguring repair. 

This is a set of five washers. 

1) & 2) Two fibre washers. These are for the lever arm whistle type pictured. 

• Only one  of these is needed for an old style brass whistle, so you would gain a spare!

• Note the position of the fibre washers on the whistle. The whistle arm is steel, yet the whistle and the boiler bush it fits into are brass. The purpose of these washers are to both maintain a steam tight seal AND prevent the brass and steel coming into direct contact with each other because this causes a bimetallic reaction and corrosion.

•  Most lever arm whistles have a conical fit where the plunger goes into the whistle barrel BUT some have a flat one and need an additional very, very small (smaller than supplied) nitrile washer on the very bottom of the assembly. If you need this washer, please contact me.  

3)  A small fibre washer for the level plug. It will fit on a plug of either thread size.

4)  A nitrile (far better than cheaper neoprene versions) for the top of the safety valve, and a larger fibre one for the bottom joint.

Fitting Advice (for the nitrile only).

Find an indentation in your workbench, of just hold the bottom of the safety valve in the vice. Push the body down and get one part of the washer under the top dome, then using thumbs...preferably with short thumb nails and stretch it over the top.

The cheaper versions are made from neoprene, and they do break. IF it should break, let me know and I shall send another two.

5) This fibre washer will fit a small (long or short) safety valve (1/4 inch BSF thread) as used on all TE, SP, SR models and most statics. It will NOT fit the larger safety valve (3/8 inch) used on some SE2 and all SE3 engines.
