FEATURED: A super fun Mid Century Original Christmas Card illustration, with dripping candles spelling out "NOEL" in bright festive colors and details. Drawn by MALCOM EDGAR CASE in the early Mid Century years, this wonderful example of the great simple yet iconic commercial designs going on then captures the joyous spirit of that golden era. We loved how the artist handled the wicks and dripping wax to spell out the word, and then used those neon colors to capture one's attention from a distance. And of course, those sensual candles do have a bit of the classic Disney movie 'Fantasia' about them- we almost expect them to start dancing around to a Christmas tune, don't we? The artist, a known NYC commercial, fashion and fine arts artist in those legendary Mid Century times, had an amazing variety of skills, able to do clothing designwork, commerical art for advertising campaigns, linear abstract figural creations, landscapes and gift card illustrations. This gorgeous design, with these candleseverywhere, and in great colors, too, is a superb example of one genre Malcom Case was so known for.
MALCOM EDGAR CASE, a NYC artist whose art was in the 1952 Annual Exhibition at the Whitney Museum, was in Who's Who in America by Falk, has sold at Sotheby's , worked as a commercial artist and designer for Webb & Knapp, among other firms, is in the Smithsonian collections, did fashion wear design work, as well as fine art linear abstracts & landscapes, and had a great command of the curved abstract line and a terrific eye for making all of his work exotic, unique, and eternally 'now'. A very talented, interesting artist about whom few details are known, sadly, but a wonderful artist with a fascinating mind and huge skills, and this feathery design is certainly proof of that!
MEASURES: 10 7/8 inches X 13 7/8 inches (paper area), and image area, including the signature is: 8.5 inches X 10 inches. Paper is medium weight artist paper, with some faint water spots in the image and minor smudges here and there- this was not meant to be a finished piece, but a colored sketch to be used as the basis for something the artist had in mind- although it is really wonderful and very complete just as it is! Signed by the artist, with his NYC address and phone number, not dated. The colors and ink are bright, crisp and so attractive; we loved the color choice and the motion of all those feathers floating around across the design! Purchased as part of a collection of the artist's original artwork, most signed, unframed & unmatted, as it is now; we will let the buyer choose the frame, mat and whether/not to trim the paper down to a smaller size for the frame. A super collectible item for any textile or wallpaper collector, or a Mid Century art collector, a very unique and delightful design, these elegant blue and gold feathers, adding a touch of whimsy and Hollywood glam to any wall!
