Drive sticks (steering rods) enable the user to stand while directing the travel of the engine under steam. They were supplied with many of the vehicles but are often lost or broken.
These are new, high quality, redesigned replacements exclusive to me. These are not only cheaper, but will not rust and are better functionally and cosmetically than the originals. They will fit on the same vehicles in exactly the same way as the originals.
PLEASE READ WITH CARE AS THERE ARE MANY POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS.
I have THREE ranges of Drive Sticks: BRONZE (this listing), ORIGINAL (Steel) and STAINLESS Steel.
THESE are NEW UNIQUE drive sticks made from BRONZE.
These are NOT COMPATIBLE with original steel sticks OR stainless ones, because they are thicker and the thread used is different from an original stick as the thread on the ends that connect to the engines are NOT different.
Design Features:
- Solid Oak varnished handle for better comfort and appearance.
- Solid bronze drive stick which will not rust.
- Thicker metal has been used so they are less likely to bend or break off at the nut (a common problem with steel originals).
OPTION 1: STANDARD BRONZE
This stick WILL fit directly onto an engine. These drive sticks are NEW and Bronze. They screw onto the steering spindle on any Mamod TE1, TE1A, SW1, SR1 or SR1A on versions where the steering spindle protrudes from the front axle and through the middle of the chimney, or on the steam rollers, in front of the chimney. These are not easy or cheap to make because the hex nut has two different screw threads within it. Total Length: 32 cm
This will be accompanied by a locking nut to fit onto the shaft and prevent the drive stick unscrewing.
OPTION 2: SHORT EARLY BRONZE TE1.
This stick WILL fit directly onto an engine. It attaches through a hole in the center of the front axle, only on early TE1 Traction engines. This stick presents the handle, just above the top of the chimney so is called the 'Short'. If you want to achieve greater height, consider buying option 4 to accompany option 1. This stick is a unique cost effective style. A comparable one has never been produced by Mamod. Length to Bend 23cm and to the nut a further 9 cm.
OPTION 3: CAR BRONZE.
This one pictured fits on the steering wheel of a Steam Car (SA1), Fire Engine (FE1) or limousine (SA1L). It is complete and will operate with no other parts. It is strong, fits over the spokes of the steering wheel and is designed to enable rotation of the wheel and therefore turning in either direction. Unlike the original Mamod version, these will fit through the rear window of a limousine, enabling it to be steered without removing the canopy. Total Length 30 cm. Now a new simplified design is shown in the last picture.

OPTION 4: STANDARD JOINER BRASS.
This is a standard joining nut for use only on these bronze drive sticks and extensions.

OPTION 5: HEX END NUT BRASS.
This is a standard hex nut the same as used on the standard bronze drive stick (Option 1). It will not fit the original steel drive sticks.
