Film adaptation of Theodor Fontane's "Effi Briest".  It's the end of the 19th Century.  The still very young Effi is married off by her family to the much older state official, Baron von Instetten.  For the free-spirited and childlike woman, the orderal of a strictly conservative marriage begins.  She ends up falling in love with the charming Major von Crampas, who courts here.  The courtship remains nothing more than a volatile episode in their lives.  Years later, when everything has already been forgotten, Instetten finds a love letter from Crampas to Effi and challenges him to a duel.  Crampas is mortally wounded in the duel.  The Baron divorces Effi and she is not allowed to see her child again.  She's violated societal rules and must return to her parents.  But Effi cannot tolerate being an outcast and slowly wastes away and dies.  Happy, happy, happy film.

 

Verfilmung von Theodor Fontanes "Effi Briest". Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts: Die noch sehr junge Effi wird von ihrer Familie mit dem wesentlich älteren Staatsbeamten Baron von Instetten verheiratet. Für die temperamentvolle kindliche Frau beginnt nun die Qual einer streng konservativen Ehe. Sie verliebt sich in den charmanten Major a.D. von Crampas, der ihr den Hof macht. Doch es bleibt bei einer flüchtigen Episode.  Jahre später, als alles schon vergessen ist, findet Instetten einen Liebesbrief von Crampas an Effi und fordert ihn zum Duell. Crampas wird tödlich getroffen. Der Baron lässt sich von Effi scheiden, ihr Kind darf sie nicht mehr sehen. Sie hat gegen die gesellschaftlichen Regeln verstoßen und muss zu ihren Eltern zurück. Doch Effi kann dieses Ausgestoßensein nicht ertragen, langsam siecht sie dahin und stirbt.
