M.V. Hartranft-THE GRAPES OF GLADNESS-1st ed/printing-1939-DeVorss Publishers. Described as "California's refreshing and inspiring answer to John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Book is 3/4 blue plaid boards with black cloth and gilt lettering on spine in fine condition. Some foxing on end papers and rubbing on corners. Gray dust jacket with blue lettering and illustration is very good with some spine fading and small chips off top and bottom. Hartranft's book is touted as a humorous counterpoint to the Grapes of Wrath and in it spoke of the "communistic implications of Steinbeck's notoriously inaccurate novel and that social revolution is the sinister suggestion emanating from the Grapes of Wrath. 127 tanned pages that include an addenda with reviews (also printed on the back cover} that support Hartranft's views. This is a scarce and almost extinct copy (Goldstone & Payne G19) published shortly (July, 1939) after the debut of Grapes of Wrath.
